What is the permanent resident (PR) card?

You can show that you are a permanent resident of Canada by showing your PR card. You will be requested to present your PR card and passport while returning to Canada on a commercial transport such as an airline, boat, train, or bus.

Before returning to Canada in a commercial vehicle, PRs who do not have or do not have a valid PR card must apply for a permanent resident travel document.

How long are PR cards valid ?

  • Permanent residency cards have a 5-year validity period. You can apply for a new PR card if your current one is about to expire or your card will expire in less than nine months.
  • The PR Card renewal process will take a minimum of 49 days to complete. However, it can be expedited if necessary. For PR renewal, a $50 fee is required.
  • Payment for a PR Card renewal is mandatory to be made online, with the receipt printed and submitted with your application. If you don’t include images that meet the photo requirements, your application may be rejected.

In order to renew a PR card, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Being a Canadian permanent resident.
  • Being physically present in Canada is essential.
  • You’ve never been charged with a crime.
  • Not a citizen of Canada or an Indian under the Indian Act.
  • Having proof that a PR card was lost or stolen (if applicable).

How can I apply for a renewal of my PR card?

To renew your PR card, you must fill out an application that contains the form IMM 5444e as well as the necessary papers.

Your initial PR card has expired or will expire soon. You may keep your card until a new one is issued if it is about to expire.
